Lawrence NY Homes for Sale

Lawrence is a coastal village in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It boasts grand historic homes that were once affluent summer residences and a rustic vibe comparable to the Gold Coast communities on Long Island’s North Shore.

Local Area Information

Lawrence is an incorporated village in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It constitutes an unofficial grouping of communities known as the Five Towns, along with the village of Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Inwood, with which it shares the 11559 ZIP code in some regions, and the Hewletts, which is composed of Hewlett and the villages of Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Neck and Woodsburgh.

The village gets its name from the three Lawrence brothers who, in the 1850s, bought and developed the once expansive farmlands into a summer retreat for the opulent and notable from New York City drawn to the countryside. The Rockaway Hunting Club was moved to its current site in 1884, the same year a hotel was built in the Isle of Wight section on the north side of Reynolds Channel, leading to a population boom of summer residents.

Lawrence’s more glorious days as a vacation hotspot for the wealthy changed after the coastline was drastically altered by several hurricanes and nor’easters, and it turned more into a modern suburban area. The need for public developments led to its incorporation as a village in 1897.

Today, it consists of a section referred to as “Back Lawrence,” in which a lot of the century-old homes still exist and give the community the distinction of being “the most aristocratic of the Five Towns.” Along with the village golf course and the preserved wetlands, the large historic homes, which are sometimes still called “cottages” as they were once summer houses, help retain the village’s bucolic air, similar to Long Island’s North Shore Gold Coast communities.

Besides single-family homes, the property inventory includes condos and co-ops, many of which, like The Regency, Lawrence Woods North and South, Lawrence Gardens, Lawrence Manor, Northgate and Southgate, line Central Avenue. Properties in the community range from 1- to 4-bedroom homes to grander “cottages” with 12 bedrooms and may offer private pools and first-floor bedrooms among other features and amenities. There are also numerous luxury residences, rental properties and waterfront homes.

Beaches & Parks

Instead of the usual parks and beaches, the village has sweeping acres of preserved natural lands and fine golf courses. The Lawrence Yacht and Country Club features a host of other facilities besides an 18-hole golf course, including Har-Tru tennis courts, pickleball courts and a clubhouse with a pro shop.

The Rockaway Hunting Club is USA’s oldest country club, though its earliest members engaged in different types of sporting events, among which are fox hunting and polo. Today, it features 25 tennis courts and an 18-hole shorefront golf course that was rated as “one of the top 100 golf holes in America” by Golf Magazine.

The private marina of the Cedarhurst Yacht Club sits on the southern coastline of Lawrence on the north side of Reynolds Channel.

The Schools
