Locust Valley NY Homes for Sale

Locust Valley is in the northern area of the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. Known for its restaurants, boutiques, antiques stores and home décor shops with their quaint signs hanging from charming Tudor-style buildings, the quiet neighborhood also stands out for its elite country clubs, good schools and ties to the equestrian scene.

Local Area Information

Locust Valley is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) under the administration of the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County on Long Island, New York. Early English settlers named the area Buckram, which stuck for nearly two centuries before it was changed to Locust Valley in 1856 for the abundant locust trees that lined the back roads.

By 1869, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) had reached the area, and a business district grew around the Locust Valley Station. Some of the most opulent families and business magnates began building beautiful mansions and manor houses in the surrounding countryside, transforming the North Shore into Long Island’s celebrated Gold Coast. In time, people generally began referring to these areas, including the villages of Bayville, Mill Neck, Lattingtown and Matinecock, as “Locust Valley.”

Locust Valley retains much of its Old World charm, most evident in the quaint shops and boutiques downtown that continue to serve the surrounding villages. Around this hub are 1,300 or so single-family homes, plenty of which are 4-bedroom homes or grander luxury residences, and some offer one or more bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features. Gracious clapboard Colonials and other traditional homes line most of the hilly landscape, away from major roads, off the beaten path.

Locust Valley rental properties are infrequent and seasonal homes fetch a premium in the summer, largely due to the fabulous Long Island Sound beaches nearby, yet still offer a more affordable alternative to the Hamptons. The small hamlet remains a social center for New York’s high society, many of whom are members of private clubs Piping Rock and The Creek with their top-rated golf courses and the Beaver Dam Winter Sports Club offering ice skating and hockey.

The neighborhood is approximately 30 miles northeast of Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Locust Valley Station via the Oyster Bay Branch of the LIRR. The area uses the 11560 ZIP code.
