Manhasset is a neighborhood in the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, on the renowned North Shore of Long Island, New York. This vibrant little community, in which culture and leisure are a part of life, is home to the “Miracle Mile” and the world-class Americana Manhasset shopping complex and is synonymous with luxury shopping and dining.

Local Area Information

Among the westernmost neighborhoods on Long Island, Manhasset was named by Wall Street Journal the best city for families in the New York metro area for 2005. This hamlet in Nassau County is on the Long Island Rail Road, with direct access to New York City. These two facts make it a popular home for professionals who work in the Big Apple.

There are three incorporated villages in the Greater Manhasset area, namely, Munsey Park, Plandome and Plandome Heights. Also included are sections of three other villages — Flower Hill, North Hills and Plandome Manor — as well as the neighborhoods of Bayview, Manhasset Park, Norgate, Shorehaven, Spinney Hill, North and South Strathmore, Strathmore Vanderbilt, Strathmore Village and Terrace Manor. Along with these communities, much of Manhasset is in the 11030 ZIP code, and a small western area is in 11020.

Since the 17th century, settlers have lived in the Manhasset area, leaving behind historic properties and period homes that can still be bought today, including Victorian, Craftsman and Dutch Colonial houses. In addition to single-family homes, the hamlet offers multifamily dwellings, townhouses at Georgetown Commons and co-ops at Gaynor Gardens. There are also numerous luxury residences as well as 4-bedroom homes and rentals.

Many Manhasset homes come with private pools, first-floor bedrooms and other desirable features. There are new constructions and undeveloped vacant lots for those who want to build sparkling new homes. The neighborhood includes one of North Hempstead Town’s Golden Age housing for the 62 and over, Manhasset Valley Residence. There are also gated communities and dwellings with potential for mother-daughter homes, accessory apartments and horse properties.

The area is popular for being home to the Americana Manhasset, a posh, world-class open-air shopping complex featuring various upscale boutiques. It is located on a prominent shopping district on Northern Boulevard called the “Miracle Mile.” The community is also home to several other shops and services located along Plandome Road.

Beaches & Parks

Manhasset Valley Park consists of acres of land with picturesque views and plenty of trees. The park’s amenities include athletic fields for various types of sports such as lacrosse, Little League and softball, a playground, and walking trails alongside a stream. It is located on Maple Street and is open from sunrise to sunset.

Mary Jane Davies Green features a playground with water spray pads, a charming blue and white gazebo, paved pathways and various sitting areas throughout the park. It is open from 7:30 AM until dark and is located on Plandome Road, across the street from the Town Hall.

Whitney Pond Park is a 24-acre scenic attraction surrounding a large pond, and has many amenities that include basketball, handball and tennis courts, fishing areas, kiddie pools, lap lanes, an outdoor pool, bathhouses, a picnic area and playground. There is also a walking path, several small bridges and many benches located throughout the park.

The Schools

Students are mainly served by the Manhasset Union Free School District, which has three public schools and is one of the smallest school districts on Long Island. Manhasset Secondary School, in which middle and high school students are housed, is located in the area, while Shelter Rock Elementary School is in North Hills and Munsey Park Elementary School is in Munsey Park.

Small areas in western and southern Manhasset are served by the Great Neck Union Free School District.

There are also private schools in Manhasset, such as St. Mary’s Elementary School and St. Mary’s High School.
