Its neighbors include Glen Cove City, Glen Head and Old Brookville Village to the west, Mill Neck Village to the northeast, Upper Brookville Village to the southeast and Locust Valley to the north, with which it shares the 11560 ZIP code along with the village of Lattingtown.

Incorporated in 1928, Matinecock is a relatively medium-sized village with a 2.7-square-mile land area and is one of Long Island’s less populous communities. Matinecock is one of the affluent communities that make up Long Island’s “Gold Coast,” a notable area on the North Shore that earned the nickname when wealthy families began building their lavish manors and summer estates on its countryside at the turn of the 20th century. The village was ranked the richest among the towns in New York State and the fifth among the richest towns in America by Worth Magazine in 1998.

Matinecock remains a predominantly residential neighborhood with a little over two miles of village roads and roughly 260 houses, most of which are single-family homes. Properties vary from the more modest to 4-bedroom homes to statelier luxury residences on five-acre lots set back a few hundred feet from the road. Various options in the lively property market also include new constructions, horse properties and homes with first-floor bedrooms among other features.

Matinecock is approximately 28 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Locust Valley Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Oyster Bay Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 13 minutes to an hour and a half via the Long Island Expressway or Cross Island Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Coffin Woods is a nature preserve with well-maintained trails for running, hiking, jogging, and dog-walking. The woodland has been used by a diverse species of birds for nesting, and has been home to foxes and resident songbirds as well. Other migratory birds are also attracted to some of the open, vine-covered spaces at the park. Many indigenous ferns and wildflowers can be spotted in the premises, along with some introduced flora, such as the Siberian Cranesbill, which is not found anywhere else on Long Island.

The beautiful, serene oasis known as Cushman Woods is a 28-acre passive-use nature preserve with an intricate trail system for birding, hiking and exploring nature. Near the trailhead is a native planting site and informational booth constructed by Boy Scout Troop 170. As a significant component of the Beaver Brook watershed, the preserve shelters numerous wildlife species, such as birds, foxes and other mammals. It also recharges Long Island’s underground water supply, absorbs harmful carbon emissions and cleans the air.
