Merrick is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) located in Nassau County’s Town of Hempstead on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is bordered by the Village of Freeport and Roosevelt on the west, Bellmore on the east, North Merrick and North Bellmore on the north as well as the waters of Merrick Bay and East Bay on the south.

Merrick was originally settled by the Native American tribe of the Merokes, after which the neighborhood is named, and was later established as a community in the late 1800s. It became a popular summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers due to its proximity to the city and accessibility via the railroad.

Merrick’s countrified ambience began to dramatically change in the 1920s as a number of grand properties were sold to real estate investors. One of these developments was the notable Merrick Gables community, which encompasses Spanish-style stucco homes built in the hopes of creating a “Hollywood East.” The hamlet then transformed into a more residential community and has continued to grow and thrive ever since.

Beaches & Parks

Two of Nassau County’s parks are located in Merrick, though the 171-acre Cow Meadow Park has a Freeport address. It is a waterfront park and preserve that has athletic fields and courts, fishing, hiking trails, a marina and playground, among others. The other park is Cammanns Pond Park, an 8-acre passive park known for its lovely long pond, which is also open for fishing.

Plenty of Hempstead Town’s parks also occupy the area. Julian Lane Park and Merrick Road Park both offer a variety of amenities for outdoor recreation. Julian Lane Park has a playground, basketball and tennis courts as well as walking and biking paths, while Merrick Road Park has different sports fields and ball courts. It is also the site of the 9-hole Merrick Golf Course overlooking Merrick Bay.

Beside the golf course is the award-winning 52-acre Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve protecting a wide diversity of flora and fauna while offering a 500-foot fishing pier, a kayak launch and walking trails.

Wynsum Avenue Park is a small but well-maintained park offering a playground that has two separate play areas for children aged 2 to 5 and 5 to 12. The playground includes swings, slides, climbers, spinners and other play equipment.
