During World War II, many Estonians sought refuge in Middle Island, and the Pine Lake area came alive with their summer camps and swimming activities. In 1957, the general store where the post office was run closed down after a 150-year operation and was later replaced by the Shell gas station that now occupies the site. With the construction of housing developments and other modern conveniences, Middle Island transformed from a sleepy farming town into the residential suburban community it is today.

Middle Island is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) on Long Island, New York. It is part of the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County and aptly named for its somewhat midway location between the eastern and western points of Long Island as well as its northern and southern limits. Its immediate neighbors are Coram and Gordon Heights to the west, Miller Place and Rocky Point to the north, Ridge to the east and Yaphank to the south.

A quiet farming community with only a handful of houses along Middle Country Road prior to the 20th century, today’s Middle Island has over 4,000 homes and 10,000 residents. The housing construction boom occurred in the 1970s, with over a quarter of its homes built during this decade. About 126 residences, or nearly three percent, were built more recently in 2010 or later.

Middle Island offers mostly single-family homes and plenty of townhouse and condo communities, including Coventry Manor, Country View Estates and Artist Lake Fairview, which features waterfront homes with fabulous views of its lake. There is also Birchwood at Spring Lake — a gated community of condos like Strathmore on the Green, which is actually located in Gordon Heights but uses the 11953 ZIP code — and Hidden Meadows, which offers co-ops. There are also homes with pools, new constructions, rentals and luxury properties with expansive lots.

Today’s Middle Island also has a burgeoning commercial district. Many shops, restaurants and other businesses are now clustered along Middle Country Road, a once unlit dirt path that carried countless American Indians and English colonists during the early years. Many industries and services are also located along Miller Place-Yaphank and Rocky Point Roads.

Still, much of Middle Island’s natural areas remain, including some lakes and ponds, and are preserved as two of Suffolk County’s parks and a New York State Pine Barrens Forest. Other lands were developed into excellent golf courses. Instead of the 11953 ZIP code, some southern parts use 11763.

Cathedral Pines County Park is a 320-acre property that features camping sites for individuals, families, and groups of various sizes, with amenities that include water and electricity. Aside from camping, this Suffolk County park also has picnic areas, mountain biking and hiking trails, bird watching, and the George Broome Memorial Activity Building. The park entrance is located on Yaphank Middle Island Road, north of East Bartlett Road.

Next to the Cathedral Pines County Park is the East Bartlett Pine Barrens State Forest, which has 99.7 acres of undeveloped land and a unique pine barrens habitat. It offers biking, observing wildlife, hunting, trapping, and hiking throughout the site, though the park has no designated trails. Visitors also have the opportunity to observe the array of wildlife species that inhabit the pine barrens. The park is accessible via East Bartlett Road, west of Yaphank Middle Island Road.

The Prosser Pines Nature Preserve is a Suffolk County park that is home to acres of white pine trees growing up to nearly 100 feet, and dating as far back as 1812. It is one of the oldest surviving white pine forests on the US east coast, and the only one of its kind on Long Island. The park offers a 0.7-mile loop trail for hiking, trail running and walking leashed dogs. It is located on Yaphank Middle Island Road, just across Cathedral Pines County Park.

The Schools

Middle Island students attend the Longwood Central School District, which has seven public schools. Elementary students within the district attend either Charles E. Walters, Coram, Ridge, or West Middle Island School, all of which feed into Longwood Middle School for grades 5-6. They then attend Longwood Junior High School next, and then Longwood Senior High School after. One of the district schools, the Longwood Middle School, is located within Middle Island.
