Miller Place NY Homes for Sale

After World War II, Miller Place experienced a rapid population growth, and most of the beach houses were transformed into year-round residences to accommodate the growing population. It became a commuter town since many of its residents worked in New York City. The community grew, as did the demand for adequate schools and health services, and most of the old farms have been developed into housing or commercial sites.

Local Area Information

Miller Place is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) on the famed North Shore of Long Island, New York, in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. It shares land borders with Coram and Middle Island on the south as well as Sound Beach and Rocky Point on the east. On the west is Mount Sinai, with which Miller Place shares many community resources, institutions and traditions, and on the northwest is Mount Sinai Harbor. A stretch of beach along the northern shoreline overlooks the Long Island Sound.

The land in Miller Place consists of hilly terrain in some areas, generally the ones close to the beach, and is fit for farming. But most farmsteads have given way to non-agricultural businesses and residential single-family homes, which now largely constitute the hamlet, though there are also several vacant lots and condos, such as those in the gated community of Country Pointe. The properties may be homes with pools, new constructions, rentals, luxury houses or waterfront homes with glorious water views of the Sound or harbor.

The commercial district is concentrated along Route 25A, a major east-west thoroughfare that bisects the area, while other shops, strip malls and services are located along Echo Avenue.

Some restaurants and inns are housed in the quaint historic structures along North Country Road. Also around this road are a number of other contributing buildings in the Miller Place Historic District, the first historic district in the Town of Brookhaven. The oldest house featured in this district was the home of William Miller, a grandson of Andrew Miller, and serves as the venue for the annual Miller Place-Mount Sinai Country Fair. All neighborhoods use the 11764 ZIP code.

Miller Place is about 60 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Port Jefferson Station via the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about an hour and 40 minutes to two hours and 10 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Cordwood Landing County Park boasts more than 70 acres of densely-treed area with extensive trails for hiking and walking leashed dogs. Many of the trails lead to a bluff offering scenic views of the Long Island Sound, and down to the beach itself for strolling, sunbathing, beachcombing, and night fishing by permit. This property was originally Girl Scout Camp Barstow before it was acquired by Suffolk County, and is centrally located in the Miller Place Historic District.

Sylvan Avenue Park features a softball/baseball field, children’s playground, and park benches. It is located on Sylvan Avenue, south of Echo Avenue, and has a parking lot for over 90 cars.

Woodhull Landing Beach is a private beach on Long Island’s North Shore, open generally during the summer season beginning Memorial Day. It is home to a local membership association known as Woodhull Landing Beach Club, made up of about a hundred member families. The beach is located at the northern end of Woodhull Landing Road.

The Schools

Most of the hamlet is in the Miller Place Union Free School District, which has four public schools. The district schools are Andrew Muller Primary, Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach Elementary, North Country Road Middle, and Miller Place High School, all of which are located in Miller Place.

The school district is home to the Panthers that put Miller Place on the map when its high school badminton team earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for achieving 504 consecutive wins in a span of 32 years, the longest sports winning streak in U.S. history.

A small population of Miller Place is either in Mount Sinai, Longwood, or Rocky Point Union Free School District. The Step by Step Montessori School is a preschool also located in Miller Place.
