Named for an Algonquin Indian Chief called Miniolagamika, which means “friendly or pleasant village,” the area was voted in 1898 as the seat for the then new Nassau County, eight years prior to its incorporation as a village and the setting of its boundaries. The Garden City Company donated to the county 4 acres of land within Garden City, also several years before it incorporated as a village and set its boundaries in 1919.
