Montauk NY Homes for Sale

Montauk is a hamlet in the Town of East Hampton at the tip of the South Fork of Long Island, New York’s renowned East End in Suffolk County. It is a major tourist attraction and a premier destination for surfing, kayaking and fishing and is considered the life of the party in the Hamptons.

Local Area Information

Montauk is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of East Hampton at the tip of the South Fork of Long Island, New York’s fabled East End. Except a small part that adjoins the neighborhood of Napeague on the southwest, it is almost entirely surrounded by several bodies of water, including the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south. Lake Montauk and a number of ponds are also within it.

“The End”, as Montauk is sometimes called, gets its name from the early Native American settlers in the area, the Montaukett tribe. It is one of the communities in the popular upscale summer getaway of the Hamptons offering pristine beaches, world-class resorts, restaurants and shopping and is a great choice for those who seek outdoor adventure in a charming, old-fashioned setting that is also rich in historical significance.

Most, if not all, of the single-family homes and other real estate in Montauk are regarded as luxury properties for their million-dollar-plus price points. Numerous homes are rental properties and may include master bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features. Dwellings vary from the more modest to the larger 4-bedroom homes to the more impressive residences offering 6 or more bedrooms. There are also new constructions and waterfront homes commanding magnificent water views, and some have private boat docks.

While the area has many offerings, big-box stores are not among them. Not only are big franchises frowned upon but are openly protested, while the local government strictly ensures that town codes are implemented to protect and preserve the land’s idyllic natural environment. Though some might say that Montauk is New York City transplanted to a beach, no other place on Long Island is farther from the bright lights of the city (except Fishers Island, which is not on the mainland) and remains one of the best spots for stargazing.

The community in the Montauk, NY 11954 ZIP code is best enjoyed during the summer as many establishments and accommodations shut down during winter. It could, however, also be a calming retreat in the winter as some resorts and lodgings are open all year round.

It is also the site of Edward V. Ecker, Sr. County Park and Montauk County Park, formerly known as Theodore Roosevelt County Park.

Montauk Point State Park has nature trails, one of which and among the more popular ones is the Paumanok Path, as well as picnic areas and a playground. Right beside it is the famous Montauk Point Lighthouse, the first lighthouse in the state of New York and the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the country.

Some of the more known beaches in Montauk include Ditch Plains, Gin, Kirk Park, South Edison and the swimming facility at Hither Hills State Park. It also has Culloden Point, the only underwater park in the state of New York. Golf enthusiasts have the Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course to enjoy and the seasonal Puff ‘N’ Putt that has a mini-golf course for the entire family.

Many of the East Hampton Town parks and preserves are located in Montauk, like the Camp Hero Little League / Softball Field, the Lions Field Recreational Facility, also known as Henry “Hank” Zebrowski Memorial Field, Montauk Skate Park and the Fort Pond House at Carol Morrison Park. Benson Reserve, Hither Woods Preserve and Turtle Cove are favored by nature lovers, birders and photographers.

The Schools

The hamlet is served by the Montauk Union Free School District, whose sole learning facility, Montauk Public School, is located in the area and is one of the few remaining K-8 school districts in the state of New York.
