Napeague NY Homes for Sale

Napeague is an area in the Town of East Hampton on the South Fork of Long Island, New York’s East End in Suffolk County. The relatively sparsely populated community features the Napeague Harbor, a popular kiteboarding and windsurfing hotspot on Long Island.

Local Area Information

Napeague is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of East Hampton on the South Fork of Long Island, New York’s East End in Suffolk County. It is bordered by the hamlets of Amagansett and Montauk as well as the waters of Napeague Bay and the Atlantic Ocean on the west, east, north and south, respectively.

Napeague takes its name from the Montaukett term for “overflowed by the sea,” a fitting description for a narrow strip of land that lay underwater when the last ice age ended. During that time, Amagansett was the easternmost neighborhood on the South Fork and Montauk was a separate island on the Atlantic. In the course of several thousand years, ocean currents filled the space with sand and formed the area known today as Napeague.

In the 2020 US Census, Napeague had a population of 368 and was the least populous CDP in East Hampton Town and the fourth least populous among the 194 CDPs on Long Island, next to Captree, Gilgo and Oak Beach, all of which are located on the Jones Beach barrier island.

Napeague encompasses a few hundred beach houses, most of which are single-family homes with some of the finest in the Hamptons. Many of them are waterfront properties lining the shore along the ocean or bay. A small population made up of year-round and seasonal residents occupies a small out-of-the-way region known as Lazy Point, which comprises about 50 privately-owned homes on lots leased from the East Hampton Town Trustees.

A handful of commercial establishments constitute Napeague. Most are resort hotels overlooking the ocean as well as a few seafood and pizza restaurants along Montauk Highway. There are very few streetlights in the community, if any, making it one of the best places for stargazing and watching the Fourth of July fireworks launched from the Devon Yacht Club.

Napeague is approximately 110 miles northeast of Manhattan in New York City. It shares the 11954 ZIP code with Montauk and the 11930 ZIP code with some portions of Amagansett.

Beaches & Parks

Napeague Harbor is a large body of water whose calm waters and the steady wind make it a suitable spot for kiteboarders and windsurfers in both beginner and advanced levels as well as those who prefer a less touristy and wavy beach than the Atlantic Ocean.

Napeague State Park is composed of 1,364 acres of largely undeveloped land with a hiking trail of about two miles and is great for hiking and walking dogs. Its most distinctive feature is a section of pristine beach on the Atlantic Ocean, though it is usually closed in the summer during the nesting season of the endangered piping plover species.

The Schools

The Amagansett Union Free School District, which has one public school, serves Napeague. Amagansett School is located in Amagansett and attended by elementary students. Middle and high school students go to the schools in the East Hampton Union Free School District.
