North Babylon NY Homes for Sale

North Babylon is a neighborhood in Suffolk County’s Town of Babylon on Long Island, New York. During its early years, its natural beauty and lush atmosphere attracted a number of affluent New York City industry tycoons followed by middle-class families that built modest summer cottages, which are precursors to the residential homes that make up the suburban community today.

Local Area Information

North Babylon is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Babylon along the Babylon-Islip Town line on Long Island, New York. It is surrounded by the communities of Deer Park to the north, Wyandanch to the northwest, West Babylon to the west, and the village of Babylon to the south. West Islip and Baywood, both of which are in the Town of Islip, lie to the east and northeast, respectively.

In the 19th century, North Babylon attracted several wealthy New York industry titans who wanted a rural retreat away from the flurry of the city and to enjoy its bounties for their recreation and leisure. Prior to the Second World War, a growing number of modest summer cottages were also built in the region by many middle-class families. Like their 19th century forerunners, they opted for the verdant surroundings of North Babylon as they sought refuge from the heat of the city and the tumults of urban living.

The residential areas are made up of mainly single-family homes, though there are also condos and co-ops, including The Commons and The Greens at North Babylon. The homes may be rental properties, potential mother-daughter, or 55+ communities, such as Primrose Lane, or have pools or accessory apartments. The hamlet uses the 11703 ZIP code.

North Babylon’s main commercial corridor is Deer Park Avenue (NY 231), which features a diverse array of restaurants, strip malls, recreation, and other establishments, along with several educational institutions and homes. On the weekends, hundreds would gather around the shopping centers to show off their classic cars, earning NY 231 the reputation of being a very popular “cruise strip.”

North Babylon is approximately 40 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Babylon Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch and Wyandanch Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch. Traveling by car to or from the city takes about an hour and 44 minutes to two hours and three minutes via the Northern State Parkway, Long Island Expressway, or Southern State Parkway.
