It is divided into five ZIP codes, which it shares with many of its neighbors: 11030 with Manhasset, 11576 with the villages of Roslyn and Roslyn Estates, 11577 with Roslyn Heights, 11507 with Searingtown and Albertson and 11040 with Manhasset Hills and North New Hyde Park.

Named for its northern location in Nassau County and very hilly terrain, North Hills incorporated as a village in 1929 and zoned its lots to a minimum of two acres. In 1980, it received approval to downzone and rezone large sections for multiple uses, such as condos and cluster residences.

Located about 17 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, the village today has around 2,500 housing units, with possibly more townhomes and condos than single-family homes and multifamily properties. Among the many options are The Chatham, Gracewood, Estates I and II, The Greens at North Hills and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, one of the private gated communities in the area offering luxury properties, along with Stone Hill.
