North Merrick is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on Long Island, New York. It is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Merrick, Roosevelt, Uniondale, East Meadow and North Bellmore to the south, west, northwest, north and east, respectively.

Besides the 11566 ZIP code, North Merrick shares a common history of growth and development with its southerly neighbor, Merrick. The areas were originally settled by the Native American tribe of the Merokes, after which they were named, and were later established as communities in the late 1800s. Merrick became a popular summer getaway for affluent New Yorkers due to its proximity to the city and accessibility via the railroad.

The hamlets’ rustic atmosphere began to shift significantly in the 1920s as a number of grand properties were sold to real estate investors. By the following decade, growth appeared to have plateaued. In 1940, North Merrick had a population of 2,072, while Merrick had 2,935 people. The latter, though, is newer and nearer the water, hence had more expensive homes, and the former is older yet offers similar advantages, whether it be the trees, the shopping or the schools, at a more affordable price.

North Merrick’s residential neighborhoods comprise largely single-family homes, some of which are white clapboard houses that come with wraparound porches, while some are one-story properties with small backyards. The dwellings vary from the more modest to more spacious 4-bedroom homes to much larger residences with 6 or more bedrooms. The flourishing real estate market also includes potential mother-daughter and houses with first-floor bedrooms.

The neighborhood lies roughly 25 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Merrick Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about 50 minutes to an hour and five minutes via the Grand Central Parkway, Cross Island Parkway or Long Island Expressway.

Beaches & Parks

A couple of Hempstead Town’s recreational facilities are located in North Merrick. Briar Place Park is a small neighborhood park that features a sand area and a sitting area.

Fraser Avenue Park is a larger neighborhood park with attractions that include a playground and multipurpose field for a range of outdoor activities. It also has a sitting area and access on both Fraser and Northridge Avenues.

The Schools

Most areas are served by the North Merrick Union Free School District, which has three public elementary schools. Two of the district schools, Harold D. Fayette and Old Mill Road Schools, are located in the community, while Camp Avenue School is in Merrick.

A small eastern area is served by the North Bellmore Union Free School District, which has five public elementary schools located in either Merrick, Bellmore or North Bellmore.

These schools then feed into the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, which has five public schools for secondary education and the Meadowbrook Alternative Program.

The Progressive School of Long Island is an alternative private learning institution also located in North Merrick. It offers students with learning differences highly personalized and character-based education with practical applications.
