Northampton NY Homes for Sale

The hamlet and census-designated place of Northampton is in Suffolk County’s Town of Southampton on Long Island, New York. A region in the former Pine Valley Village is now a component of this lightly populated community, along with a pristine natural lake, a fine golf course, county park and lots of other open spaces.

Local Area Information

Northampton is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the northwest Town of Southampton, one of the ten townships that constitute Suffolk County on eastern Long Island, New York. It is tucked between Riverside to the east, Westhampton to the southeast, Eastport to the southwest, Calverton to the northwest and the hamlet of Riverhead to the north, separated by the Peconic River.

Northampton includes a portion of a village once known as Pine Valley, which disintegrated around 1991. At 11.55 square miles in the 2020 US Census, it was the fourth largest CDP in Southampton Town, next to Bridgehampton, Hampton Bays and Westhampton. The hamlet, though, remains one of the least densely populated areas on Long Island with a population of only 763 compared to neighboring Riverside’s 2,882 within a 2.7-square-mile area.

Northampton’s sparse population is primarily due to expansive open fields, including a county park and a rolling 18-hole golf course. The relatively small number of single-family homes and vacant lots are located in the residential districts on the west and northeast side of the breathtaking Wildwood Lake, one of the area’s main attractions.

Despite the low population count, Northampton offers residents and visitors a sprinkling of commercial establishments and services, such as a bowling center and a waterfront resort hotel with stunning lake and nature vistas. Shopping, dining and additional entertainment options are nearby in Downtown Riverhead, which offers plenty of big box retail stores, restaurants and recreation.

Northampton is roughly 78 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Riverhead Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and three quarters to two hours and 26 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway. The hamlet uses the 11901 ZIP code.

Beaches & Parks

The Pine Meadow County Park is one of the sites in Suffolk County that offers opportunities for falconry, or the hunting of small animals in the wild using a trained raptor. It is open only to residents of Suffolk County with permits, licenses and other requirements during falconry seasons, usually from November through February. This park also offers hiking, archery hunting, and for those with valid “duck stamps,” seasonal waterfowl hunting. The park entrance is located on Moriches-Riverhead Road (County Road 51).

Wildwood Lake is notable for its good assortment of fish species, whether reproduced naturally or stocked by Southampton Town. It offers fishing opportunities to Town residents and guests, though the latter would need to be accompanied by a Town licensed guide.

The Schools

Northampton is served by the Riverhead Central School District, which has seven public schools. Aquebogue Elementary School is in Aquebogue, Riley Avenue Elementary School is in Calverton, and Phillips Avenue Elementary School is geographically located in Riverside. The rest of the district schools are in the hamlet of Riverhead.

The Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus and LIU (Long Island University) Riverhead are also located in Northampton.
