Northville is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Riverhead, one of the ten townships in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. It is bounded by the Riverhead hamlet on the west, Aquebogue and Jamesport on the south and Mattituck and Laurel on the east. The first three are also part of Riverhead Town, while the last two are in the Town of Southold. Riverhead and Southold constitute two of the three townships on the North Fork of Long Island’s celebrated East End.

Once referred to as both Success Post Office and Sound Avenue, Northville began its long productive farming journey in the late 1600s, when the area was first settled by farmers including many prominent Hallock families. The Hallocks lived in the area that became the modern-day Hallockville Museum Farm, surrounded by expansive land known today as Hallock State Park Preserve. The hamlet, which became an incorporated village from 1921 through 1930, was renamed Northville in 1927 and remained highly productive.

Around the 1980s, the entire North Fork region, including Northville, was transformed by the burgeoning vineyard industry and became part of the North Fork of Long Island American Viticultural Area (AVA). This wine country on the North Fork consists of about 3,000 acres of lush vineyards and over three dozen highly esteemed wineries, such as Palmer Vineyards and Martha Clara Vineyards, both of which are on the designated historic corridor of Sound Avenue.

Beaches & Parks

Hallock State Park Preserve, once known as Jamesport State Park, is a 225-acre waterfront property that features almost a mile of gorgeous sandy beach along the Long Island Sound. The preserve offers marked nature trails for hiking, bird watching, and nature walks, and is located on Sound Avenue, just past the historic landmark called Hallockville Museum Farm.

North Fork County Park is a thickly forested area with freshwater marshes and natural habitats for a diversity of small animals and bird species, and offers opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and hunting. Access to this Suffolk County park is on the northern side of Sound Avenue Historic Corridor, east of Church Lane.
