It offers stretches of white sand beaches, picturesque water views, boating, public fishing docks, surfing, and biking, with an 18-hole golf course and other sports and recreational facilities available at the nearby Cedar Beach.

Oak Beach is an unincorporated community near the eastern end of Jones Beach Island, one of the four barrier islands protecting the South Shore of Long Island, New York, in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County. It is bordered by Gilgo Beach on the west, the New York State Boat Channel on the north, and the Fire Island Inlet on the south. East of Oak Beach is a region that is part of the Fire Island National Seashore from west of the Robert Moses Causeway cloverleaf interchange to the Captree State Park on the island’s easternmost tip.

Across the State Boat Channel to the north is Captree, which is a census-designated place (CDP), as are Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach. The three regions used to form a larger CDP known as Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree until the 2010 census, when Gilgo became a separate CDP. The Oak Beach-Captree CDP became two separate CDPs known as Oak Beach and Captree in the 2020 census. Oak Beach had a land area of 1.14 square miles and was the fourth smallest among the 127 CDPs in Suffolk County, next to New Suffolk, Halesite, and Eatons Neck.

Oak Beach is occupied by the Richard L. Brooks Memorial Park in the middle with two communities on each side of the park. The private gated beach community of Oak Beach Association is on the east. Property owners on Oak Beach own their single-family homes, but the lands are owned by the Town of Babylon and are on long-term lease. Many of the homes have great water views, especially the waterfront properties, some of which are luxury homes with a pool or may be rentals. The community uses the 11702 ZIP code.

Oak Beach lies around 46 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Babylon Station via the Babylon and Montauk Branches of the Long Island Rail Road. A car trip to or from the city takes about an hour and 10 minutes to an hour and a half via the Southern State Parkway, Northern State Parkway or Long Island Expressway. The area is accessible via the Meadowbrook and Wantagh State Parkways to the west and the Robert Moses Causeway to the east with the Ocean Parkway connecting the three causeways.

Beaches & Parks

Also called Oak Beach Park, the Richard L. Brooks Memorial Park offers a fishing dock, picnic area, playground and portable toilet. Instead of grass and trees, however, this Suffolk County parkland of more than nine acres consists of a spacious parking lot that can accommodate nearly 300 vehicles. A multitude of local motorcycle and car enthusiasts are attracted by the open space where they gather for informal early Sunday morning motor rallies during the summer season.

Captree State Park is a 340-acre property that has amenities for fishing and crabbing, among many others. It is home to the Captree Fleet, the largest public fishing fleet on Long Island and one of the largest in New York State, from which seasonal charter boats can be availed for fishing, scuba diving, cruises, and sightseeing excursions. Other amenities of the park include a marina, playground, picnic tables, a full-service restaurant, concession stand, and fishing supply store, which also provides fuel pumping services at the boat basin.
