Oakdale began when a tavern was founded in 1820 and started attracting New York City aristocrats who would wine and dine when not hunting or fishing in the area. When the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) reached the hamlet in 1866, the tavern’s affluent patrons established the South Side Sportsmen’s Club and embarked on a rivalry over who could build the most stunning mansion in the region; thus, the neighborhood became the construction site of the sprawling estates of these wealthy industry titans, including the Vanderbilts.

Oakdale is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is surrounded by Sayville and West Sayville to the east, Bohemia to the north and Great River to the west. One of the four longest rivers on Long Island, the six-mile-long Connetquot River, runs along its western and southern banks, providing the waterfront areas with relaxing and breathtaking views of the river.

Residential districts comprise mainly single-family homes, with plenty that are as large as 4-bedroom homes or larger, and several multifamily residences, some of which are co-ops such as those at Birchwood on the Green. Oakdale also offers 55+ communities, one of which is Locust Cove offering homes with a garage among other features. More commercial establishments and services are located along or near the riverfront and on Sunrise Highway, another major artery marking the area’s northern border.

The community is around 50 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Oakdale Station via the LIRR’s Montauk Branch, providing convenient access to the city and the famed East End. Beaches & Parks

The 37.8-acre Byron Lake Park is a tranquil, tree-lined park that boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool with waterslide, a sizable picnic area with lots of barbeque pits, a gazebo overlooking the lovely Byron Lake, a playground, and picturesque pathway around the site, making it a popular spot for pool parties and picnics. Many locals also find the park’s location convenient for biking, walking, or playing basketball. Located on Bayview Drive, the park holds summer camps run by the Town of Islip during the summer.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a 3,473-acre shelter and natural habitat for a variety of interesting plant, fish, and wildlife species. Its amenities include 50 miles of trails for nature hiking, cross-country skiing/snowshoeing, and horseback riding, as well as fly fishing in the Connetquot River.
