Originally called South Bay, the waterfront community became known as Christian Hook based on the religious affiliation of most of its colonists. It was eventually renamed “Oceanside” in 1918, though it was not actually on the ocean as the Island Park communities and the Long Beach barrier island separate it from the Atlantic Ocean to the south. With so many houses built over the years and especially during the post-war housing boom, the hamlet became more like Levittown, one of Long Island’s most populous neighborhoods.

Beaches & Parks

Four of Hempstead Town’s recreational facilities occupy the hamlet. Margie Street Park, also referred to as Oceanside Mini Park, is a small waterfront facility that offers a playground, basketball court and sitting area.

The Marine Nature Study Area is a 52-acre preserve dedicated to the study of the environment and natural history. It offers a mile of trails and is notable for the diverse variety of plant and wildlife species that take refuge in the area.

Oceanside Park is also a waterfront facility, though much larger in size than the one on Margie Street. It is a popular site for those who love basketball, baseball/softball, roller skating, volleyball, tennis, swimming, handball/paddle ball and table games. The park also comes with a dog run, multipurpose fields and paths as well as a playground.

Wrights Field, located on the eastern end of Mott Street, is another small waterfront facility that features a baseball/softball field.
