Old Bethpage NY Homes for Sale

Old Bethpage is a hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. Home of the U.S. Open, the area is best known as the primary location of the Bethpage State Park and its world-class golf courses.

Local Area Information

Old Bethpage is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Oyster Bay, one of Nassau County’s three townships on western Long Island, New York. It shares land borders with Bethpage to the southwest, Farmingdale Village to the south, and Plainview to the northwest, with which it also shares a number of community resources. Melville and East Farmingdale, both of which are in Suffolk County’s Town of Huntington, lie to the northeast and southeast, respectively.

The area known today as Old Bethpage was included in the 1695 Bethpage Purchase, and was named “Bethphage” because it lay between Jericho and Jerusalem, much like the eponymous biblical town. Following Bethpage State Park’s opening in 1932, the neighboring hamlet of Central Park was renamed Bethpage in 1936. The area originally called Bethpage was approved by the post office to change its name to Old Bethpage when it refused to merge with the new Bethpage.

The community resources that the Old Bethpage, NY 11804 ZIP code shares with the adjacent hamlet of Plainview include a fire department, library, public school system, water district, and community park. Though Plainview is only slightly larger than Old Bethpage, its population is about five times more than that of Old Bethpage because the latter mostly comprises vast areas of undeveloped lands and parks.

The rest of Old Bethpage are residential zones of predominantly single-family homes and several two- and three-family dwellings, a number of which are rental properties or luxury residences that have pools. There are also 55+ communities, one of which is a magnificent gated community called Country Pointe Plainview that offers resort-style living in any of their splendid 2-bed condos, villas, and semi-attached homes.

Old Bethpage is about 32 miles east of Manhattan in New York City, and served by the Bethpage Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour to an hour and 12 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

The Battle Row Campground is a 44-acre trailer park and tent camping accommodation site. Of the 64 campsites, 52 have provisions for water and electricity, while the rest are tent sites. There is also a recreational field, swings, and a comfort station with restrooms and showers.

Bethpage State Park consists of 1,477 acres of greenspace that offers playing fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, sledding, trails for hiking, biking, horse-back riding, and snowshoeing/cross-country skiing, as well as two picnic pavilions that can accommodate as many as 250 people. But the park is most notable for its five top-notch, 18-hole golf courses, one of which is the world-famous Black Course, the venue for the 2002 and 2009 United States Open, the 2012 and 2016 Barclays, and the 2019 PGA Championship.

The Old Bethpage Village Restoration contains 209 acres of authentic recreated living museum of a Long Island village during the mid-19th century, featuring dozens of historic buildings and period lifestyle demonstrations by costumed actors.

Residents also have access to the 19-acre Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park in Plainview, and any of the other parks in the hamlet, such as the Peter C. Collins Soccer Park and Haypath Road Park. The latter has a baseball field, basketball court, playground, and tennis courts.

The Schools

Much of Old Bethpage is within the boundaries of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, which has seven schools. The Old Bethpage Elementary School is located in the community, while the rest of the district schools are in Plainview.

Some small portions of the neighborhood are served by either the Bethpage Union Free School District or Farmingdale Union Free School District.
