The bayfront community of Oyster Bay is one of nearly forty hamlets and villages in the township also named Oyster Bay in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. Ideally located along the Oyster Bay Harbor, the area is a popular destination for water activities and gorgeous harbor views, with a lot of historic and cultural sites throughout the neighborhood.

Local Area Information

Oyster Bay is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the much larger Town of Oyster Bay, which is a third of Nassau County’s townships on western Long Island, New York. It is bounded by Oyster Bay Cove Village on the east, East Norwich on the south, Upper Brookville Village on the southwest, and Mill Neck Village on the northwest. Its northern shores are lapped over by the waters of the Oyster Bay Harbor.

Since as early as the 1600s, the area has been known to be a great source of some of the finest oysters, earning it the name “Oyster Bay,” which the hamlet also later adopted. Up to ninety percent of the oysters harvested in the State of New York come from the area, which is now the sole source of Long Island’s traditionally farmed oysters.

Residential districts in the Oyster Bay, NY 11771 ZIP code are generally composed of single-family homes, some of which are luxury houses with pools, while some are waterfront properties overlooking the harbor, or at least have great views of the water and the occasional boats. There are also many two- and three-family residences, as well as nearly 30 multifamily housing sites, including co-ops, condos, and rental apartments.

Oyster Bay’s “main street” is Pine Hollow Road, which becomes South Street past Berry Hill Road and is lined with a wealth of shops, strip malls, dining options, and other establishments. Yet a feeling of nostalgia still prevails in Oyster Bay, as there are plenty of historic sites, museums, and quaint homes that date as far back as the 1860s in the area. The community continues to take pride in the distinction of being the site of Theodore Roosevelt’s childhood home.

The hamlet is roughly 28 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City. It is served by the Oyster Bay Station, the eastern terminus of the Long Island Rail Road’s Oyster Bay Branch. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about 57 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.
