Plandome is an affluent bayside village in the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, on Long Island, New York. An ad copy published in the 1900s by its developer, Plandome Land Company, best sums up this unique village and rings true even many decades later: “Plandome offers a life combining the pleasures of the sea and hills with the facilities of city residence. The sort of life about which the average businessman only dreams about.”

The Incorporated Village of Plandome is a small affluent coastal community in Nassau County’s Town of North Hempstead on the legendary North Shore of Long Island, New York. It is in the 11030 ZIP code comprising the area of Greater Manhasset, which is anchored by Manhasset and is composed of all or segments of Plandome’s three surrounding villages: Plandome Manor to the north, Flower Hill to the east and Plandome Heights to the south. It overlooks the picturesque Manhasset Bay to the west.

The streets that wind through Plandome do not have sidewalks and are lined with dwellings that are mostly Colonials, Dutch Colonials, large ranches, split-levels and English Tudors. A typical single-family home is a large ’20s or ’30s Colonial with a well-kept lawn, center hall, living room, large formal dining room, four or five bedrooms, two or more baths, full attic and basement and a detached two-car garage. Many historic homes that once belonged to opulent industrialists and investors remain in the village.

As a mostly residential community, Plandome does not have apartments, co-ops, condominiums nor shopping centers, as zoning excludes any commercial development. It does have a few multifamily houses, such as duplex homes, and plenty of waterfront houses delivering scenic water views of the bay. There are also homes with a pool, first-floor bedrooms and other great features.

In addition to luxury residences, Plandome has dwellings with the potential for a mother-daughter setup, horse property or an accessory apartment, which can serve as rental properties or guest houses. There are also undeveloped vacant lots waiting for their new owners to build new constructions.

Shopping is less than 10 minutes away in Manhasset, which is home to many recreational sites, restaurants and stores, including the shopping mecca Americana Manhasset, and is over a half hour by rail in Manhattan, New York City.

Beaches & Parks

At the heart of Plandome is the Village Green, a tree-lined grassy expanse and open space where various events are held and is generally the community’s center of activity. It has served several generations of local kids that have used it as a playing field, and is sometimes the venue for the village’s most festive celebration, the Fourth of July, where hundreds of villagers gather for a picnic, games and prizes.

At the western end of the Village Green is the Village Hall, a municipal mansion that used to be an elementary school. Between this and the Green are two well-kept Har Tru tennis courts, maintained by the Plandome Field and Marine Club, for exclusive use by its Tennis Club and Beach & Tennis Club members and their immediate families and guests from May through November, weather-permitting.
