Port Jefferson Station NY Homes for Sale

Port Jefferson Station derives its name from the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) depot constructed in 1873 to serve the population of neighboring Port Jefferson Village. In the 1950s, Port Jefferson Station started its transition from a farming region into a suburb with the building of Nesconset Highway, and by the early 1970s, it had grown into a largely suburban community.

Local Area Information

Port Jefferson Station is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Brookhaven on Long Island, New York. Its immediate neighbors are East Setauket to the west, the village of Port Jefferson to the north, Mount Sinai to the east, and Terryville to the southeast, with the Nesconset-Port Jefferson Highway (NY 347) separating Port Jefferson Station from Terryville.

The community offers newer single-family homes at reasonable prices, and there are also multifamily residences, co-ops including those in Stony Hollow, townhouses and condo communities, such as Sagamore Hills, Stonington and The Ranches at Long Lake Estates. The last two are both gated communities that offer waterfront homes affording remarkable water views of their ponds or lake. There are also homes with pools, rentals, 55+ communities, undeveloped vacant lots, accessory apartments and luxury properties.

The hamlet also offers greater accessibility to the LIRR, whose tracks delineate its northern border and separates it from Port Jefferson, which has a bustling nightlife and shopping that Port Jefferson Station residents can take advantage of. But even Port Jefferson Station itself has a booming commercial district along Nesconset Highway (NY 347), Patchogue Road (NY 112) and Hallock Avenue, which are lined with many shops, restaurants and other businesses and services.

The Terryville Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency response services to a larger eastern area of Port Jefferson Station, and a smaller western area is served by the Setauket Fire Department. The neighborhoods are divided into the 11776, 11733 and 11777 ZIP codes.

The area is around 50 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and is close to modern conveniences and main thoroughfares, allowing for an easier commute. Port Jefferson Station, the eastern terminus of the LIRR’s Port Jefferson Branch, serves the community. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and 38 minutes to an hour and 51 minutes via the Long Island Expressway (I-495).
