Port Jefferson NY Homes for Sale

Shipbuilding became Port Jefferson’s main source of wealth in the early 19th century, and the small town soon grew into a larger community. Its present-day name was chosen in 1836 to promote the shipbuilding industry and to commemorate President Thomas Jefferson who supported a project that saved its lower section from flooding. It officially became the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson in 1963, and the lower section was revitalized soon after as local tourism brought in more revenues and the waterfront became more accessible.

Local Area Information

Port Jefferson is a quaint historic coastal village that is now a holiday spot for families seeking year-round activities on the renowned North Shore of Long Island, New York. At 3.06 square miles in the 2020 US Census, it was the largest village in the Town of Brookhaven and the eighth largest among the 32 villages in Suffolk County.

The nearest communities to Port Jeff, as it is informally called, are Belle Terre Village to the northwest, Mount Sinai to the east, Port Jefferson Station to the south as well as East Setauket and Poquott Village to the southwest. The Long Island Sound on the north, Mt. Sinai Harbor on the northeast and Port Jefferson Harbor on the west, nestled between the tri-village area of Port Jefferson, Belle Terre and Poquott, all offer picturesque sunset and water views to the waterfront properties along or near the coast.

Residential districts are made up of single-family homes, townhouses and condos, such as the ones in The Riviera, Harbor View, The Terraces, Town & Country and Regency Condo, which offers rentals. There are also homes with pools, gated communities, potential mother-daughter, luxury houses, accessory apartments, and historic homes that date as far back as the 1860s and retain an old world charm.

The attractive area even captured the eye of showman P.T. Barnum, who purchased land in the village area known as Brick Hill in 1873. Local legend has it Barnum wanted to use the land for his circus as a winter home, but in reality Barnum played the real estate speculator part. The village named a street in honor of the showman, whose home still stands and is now privately held.

The village comes alive throughout the year with a number of events, including the annual Dickens Festival, which celebrates Charles Dickens and his famous work, “A Christmas Carol.” Port Jefferson, NY 11777 is approximately 50 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Port Jefferson Station, the eastern terminus of the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Jefferson Branch. The Clifton H. Lee Memorial Parkland, sometimes referred to as Rocket Ship Park, is set in the midst of the village downtown and easily accessible from many areas. The park facilities include several swings and climbing gear, as well as three illuminated tennis courts, a basketball court, and a spacious picnic area. Summer shows for children are held on the grassy area beyond the small barn.

The Mayor Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park is a multi-purpose recreational facility with breathtaking vistas of the Port Jefferson Harbor. It is home to the Chandlery Waterfront Playground and Picnic Area, a promenade along the shores, and a 350-foot pier for fishing or taking in the spectacular sights of the harbor or sunset.

Harborfront Park is also the location of the Village Center, which is near a seasonal ice skating facility called The Rinx. This 50′ x 100′ outdoor ice rink provides a fantastic opportunity for locals and tourists to enjoy the park during the winter months, encouraging multi-use of the park resource. A little cost is charged for group courses, private training, and parties.

The Joe Erland Field offers an illuminated softball field and a soccer facility for all locals who take advantage of the Village recreation department’s numerous youth and adult initiatives. The park is located on Caroline Avenue, off Barnum Avenue, and has parking spaces for over 40 vehicles.

The East Beach and West Beach span more than two miles of beachfront and provide opportunities for fishing, sunning, and simply walking on the sand, and has parking for community members. Picnic tables, a play area with swing set, and supervised amenities for safety and leisure are all available at the beaches. They are operational from mid-June to Labor Day, and lifeguarded every day from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Also within the Village is Roosevelt Avenue Park, which contains a quiet play area, and Texaco Avenue Park, which has a picnic area, play equipment and a half basketball court. The latter is located in the Village’s uptown area.
