Port Washington is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, on the renowned North Shore of Long Island, New York. It forms the Greater Port Washington area with the villages of Manorhaven, Port Washington North, Baxter Estates and Sands Point to the north. It adjoins the villages of Plandome Manor and Flower Hill to the south and is hugged by the waters of Hempstead Harbor and Manhasset Bay on the east and west, respectively.

Port Washington residents take great pride in the waterfront hamlet they refer to as “Port.” Co-ops, houseboats and luxury properties are available, and single-family homes come in a great diversity of architectural styles, such as bungalows, ranches, Tudors and Mediterranean estates. One-of-a kind shops include the 1946 opened Dolphin Bookshop & Café, which is located in a historic building.

The neighborhood is the eastern terminus of the Port Washington Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, which is coveted for its direct and fast service to Manhattan in New York City, roughly 20 miles away. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about an hour to an hour and 50 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Cross Island Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

The Town of North Hempstead Aerodrome is strictly for the use of model aircrafts that are radio controlled. The park is located on West Shore Road and is open from sunrise to sunset to residents who purchase memberships.

Blumenfeld Family Park on Main Street has a paved path that meanders through its large central green. What makes the park special and different from the rest is the water playground at the back, which offers various water features and play areas for children of any age. It has a splash pad with fountains, large buckets to spill water and a mushroom waterfall, making it a perfect spot to spend the summer or any other hot day.

Formally known as Bar Beach and Hempstead Harbor Park, North Hempstead Beach Park consists of 34 acres of sandy beach and a 60-acre park with bathhouses, playing courts for basketball, bocci, handball, paddleball, shuffleboard and volleyball, a boat ramp, fishing pier, horseshoe pit, mile-jogging course, ballfields for Little League, soccer and softball, concessions, picnic areas with barbecues and shelter pavilions, a playground, and promenade. Water activities include kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.

Sandminers Monument Park is one of Port Washington’s historical landmarks, a tribute to its early sand miners. It features a monument of three sculptured sand miners holding sand mining equipment and two large hands carefully pouring sand above a replica of downtown Manhattan, symbolizing Port Washington’s significance in the city’s development. It also features maps of sand mining locations on Long Island and a glimpse into construction efforts in the city.

The Schools

Students are served by the Port Washington Union Free School District, which has seven public schools, five of which are located in the area. Guggenheim Elementary and John Philip Sousa Elementary Schools are in the adjoining Village of Sands Point. The district is known for its rich academic, extracurricular and athletic programs. There are also several private schools located in Port Washington.
