Rego Park NY Homes for Sale

The neighborhood of Rego Park is located in the borough of Queens in New York City. The early English and Dutch settlers called their community Whitepot, which is believed to have come from the Dutch name “Whiteput”, or “hollow creek”. It was renamed Rego Park from the first two words of the name of the company that began the area’s development in 1925, Real Good Construction Company.

Local Area Information

Like many communities in Queens, Rego Park is a melting pot of diverse cultures and various immigrant groups from Albania, South Asia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Iran, Israel, South Korea, Peru, Romania, and a significant number of Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Much of the area has retained the character of a classic New York immigrant community and most of the residents are Bukharan Jewish, whose previous life in the Soviet Union reflected on Rego Park’s Russian vibe with many signs in Russian Cyrillic alphabet. The area is sometimes called Rego Parkistan where there are many synagogues, kebab places, kosher restaurants, Russian specialty food stores and other establishments that serve Central Asian cuisine, a food scene so fascinating that it was once featured on Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods America.

Rego Park is an upper-middle-class and middle-class neighborhood where in the north, it is mostly large apartment complexes, multi-family homes and railroad houses while in the south, many of the houses are in the colonial, English, and Tudor styles with slate roofs along with some two and multi-family townhouses, detached wood-frame houses. In an area called the Crescents, named for its semicircular shaped streets, there are many Tudor and single-family homes as well as large lawns and tree plantings on the sidewalks. Many of the newer houses that are cheaply and uniformly made are called “Fedders houses” because of the air conditioners’ names that are sticking out of the walls, most of which are of the Fedders brand. Based on statistics, as of 2018, Rego Park is considered to be a high-income neighborhood compared to the rest of the city and not gentrifying.

Rego Park also has a commercial zone and is home to some of the most popular shopping destinations in Queens, one of which is the Rego Center. Some are along 63rd Drive, its main business thoroughfare, with many one-story shops dating back to the 1930s. The rest can be found along 108th Street including bakeries, pharmacies, restaurants, and other smaller stores in the shopping district.

Rego Park is patrolled by the NYPD’s 112th Precinct which ranked 6th safest out of 69 patrol areas for per-capita crime in 2010. Similar to Forest Hills, the community’s low crime rate is attributed to its seclusion and reputation as a “suburb within the city”
