Ridge NY Homes for Sale

In the early years, Samuel Randall inhabited the Ridge area with his family and cultivated 4,000 acres of land that became known as Randallville for a while. Years later, the settlement adopted its current name after Randall’s large farmland that he called Ridge in reference to its natural topography.

Local Area Information

Ridge is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Brookhaven on Long Island, New York. It shares land borders with Rocky Point and Middle Island on the west, East Shoreham on the north, Wading River and Calverton on the east as well as Yaphank and Upton on the south.

Ridge lies in the northwest corner of the Long Island Central Pine Barrens area, with a sign in the heart of the community referring to it as the “Gateway to the Pine Barrens.”

With a land area of 13.21 square miles in the 2020 US Census, Ridge was the fifth largest CDP in the Town of Brookhaven and the ninth largest among the 194 CDPs on Long Island. Its population of 13,271 was relatively low in contrast to Coram’s 40,220 in a 13.82-square-mile area, making Ridge one of Long Island’s least densely populated communities.

Residential areas in Ridge are made up of mainly single-family homes and a large number of condos, many of which are in housing developments that include Leisure Village, Leisure Glen, Leisure Knoll and The North Fork Gateway, one of the newest additions to the neighborhoods. The first three are gated communities for the 55 and over. There are also new constructions, homes with pools, rentals, potential horse properties, vacant lots and waterfront homes overlooking a scenic pond.

All the shops, dining options, financial centers and other commercial establishments and services are clustered along Middle Country Road (NY25), a major thoroughfare that intersects the area. Much of Ridge uses the 11961 ZIP code, while other regions use either 11792 or 11786.

Ridge is roughly 60 miles northeast of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Yaphank Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about an hour and 40 minutes to two hours and 5 minutes via the Long Island Expressway (I-495) or Southern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Brookhaven State Park is a 1,638-acre undeveloped property that is part of the Long Island Pine Barrens, which protects a variety of oak-pine habitats and offers hunting and hiking. The park features the Brookhaven Trail, which leads south and connects with Paumanok Path, some wetlands and coastal plain ponds within its perimeters. This State of New York park is located along the eastern side of William Floyd Parkway.

Longwood Pine Barrens State Forest boasts 165 acres of parkland that comprises the unique pine barrens, a rare form of habitat or migration site for a variety of animal species. Activities offered include hunting and trapping small or big game, observing wildlife, and hiking, though visitors won’t find any designated trails within the property. The park is located on the southern side of Middle Country Road and the western side of the William Floyd Parkway.

Panamoka Pine Barrens State Forest also has the unique habitat of the pine barrens in its 98.1 acres of natural environment. Like Longwood Pine Barrens, Panamoka also allows hunting, trapping, viewing various wildlife species, and hiking throughout the property. But unlike Longwood, Panamoka has a hiking trail called Tarkill Trails, which is linked with the trails in the adjoining Brookhaven State Park. Panamoka Pine Barrens is also occupied by the beaches of the Lake Panamoka Civic Association.

The Ridge Conservation Area Pine Barrens State Forest is a 184-acre property that is home to open farm fields, wooded forests, and fish ponds, one of which is Randall Pond, a prime area for fishing and having picnics. This state park also offers opportunities for hunting, trapping, kayaking/canoeing, wildlife watching, and hiking along marked trails, with informative trail help available for visitors. Entrances to the property are along Randall Road, near its intersection with Middle Country Road.

The Schools

Most of Ridge is served by the Longwood Central School District, which has seven public schools. Elementary students within the district attend either Charles E. Walters, Coram, Ridge, or West Middle Island School, all of which feed into Longwood Middle School for grades 5-6. They then attend Longwood Junior High School next, and then Longwood High School after. One of the district schools, Ridge Elementary School, is located in the hamlet.

Other portions of Ridge are zoned for different school districts, such as the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District in the north. The district’s Shoreham-Wading River High School is also located in Ridge.
