It is believed that the term Ronkonkoma is derived from the name of a freshwater pond called Raconkamuck, whose waters were considered sacred by the four Indian tribes that shared its shoreline. Known today as Lake Ronkonkoma, it attracted many people to the area and, with the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, became instrumental to Ronkonkoma’s growth and development.

Ronkonkoma is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It shares land borders with Hauppauge and the village of Islandia on the west, Central Islip on the southwest, Bohemia on the south, Holbrook on the southeast and the hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma, which bestrides the townships of Brookhaven and Smithtown, on the northeast.

The community consists of a natural body of water also called Lake Ronkonkoma, the largest freshwater lake on Long Island and maintained by the Town of Islip. The Long Island MacArthur Airport, also owned and operated by the Town of Islip and sometimes called simply Islip Airport, as well as the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center are both located in the hamlet.

The residential districts in Ronkonkoma contain various housing developments and gated communities, including Colony Park, which offers over 500 units of luxury rentals in a park-like environment, and the private condo community of Nob Hill North and South. Other neighborhoods include Lake Hills, located north of the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and south of Motor Parkway, as well as Lakeland, located south of I-495 and generally north of Peconic Street and east of Colony Park.

The real estate inventory also includes vacant lots and plenty of beautiful single-family homes, some of which are new constructions, potential mother-daughter, houses with pools or may have legal accessory apartments. Beyond the residential homes, farther south and east, are a mix of industrial and commercial areas. The community is about 50 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Ronkonkoma Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma Branch. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and 10 minutes to an hour and 55 minutes via the I-495 or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Flight Adventure Park is a vast indoor trampoline park encompassing 26,000 square feet of area, more than half of which is occupied by wall-to-wall trampolines. Its other attractions include Dodgeball and Airslam Basketball, and the park also plays host to various types of parties and events.

The Ronkonkoma Recreation Center is a popular regional destination with a sandy lakeside beach and several park amenities, such as a basketball court, playground, large picnic area, handball courts, and tennis courts. The facility also includes a recreational hall and a Senior Citizens center, which offers a variety of leisure activities for the elderly residents of the Town of Islip.

The Schools

Community students attended the schools of the Ronkonkoma School District until 1960, when the district consolidated with the Oakdale-Bohemia School District and formed the Connetquot Central School District. Out of the ten public schools in the district, four are located in the hamlet: Cherokee Street Elementary, Edith L. Slocum Elementary, Helen B. Duffield Elementary, and Ronkonkoma Middle School.

A few homes in the northwestern corner of the neighborhood are served by the Hauppauge Union Free School District.
