The Village of Roslyn Harbor lies along the North Hempstead-Oyster Bay Town line in Nassau County, on the renowned North Shore of Long Island, New York. The suburban waterfront community is known for its verdant, rolling landscape with a pastoral feel, the spectacular views of Hempstead Harbor, and the lasting legacy of its historic Gold Coast mansions.

Local Area Information

Roslyn Harbor is an incorporated village located mostly in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the celebrated North Shore of Long Island, New York. It is partly in the Town of Oyster Bay, and bounded by Glenwood Landing on the north and northeast, Greenvale on the southeast, as well as the villages of Roslyn and East Hills on the south. The shoreline is hugged by the waters of Hempstead Harbor, offering scenic views and access to the Long Island Sound.

Beginning in the 1830s, Roslyn Harbor, along with many other North Shore communities, gradually transformed from a farming area into a land of estates and large summer houses, becoming a picturesque rustic retreat for opulent New York City families. With the rapid development of the neighboring Roslyn area into a commercial center with port facilities, Roslyn Harbor incorporated in 1931 to gain control of zoning. The coming of the war ended the estate era, and the village evolved into a suburban residential community.

The Roslyn Harbor, NY 11576, 11545, and 11548 ZIP codes constitute the Greater Roslyn community anchored by Roslyn Village, which was named for the village of Roslin in Scotland. Once advertised by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) as the “Switzerland of Long Island” for its hilly landscape, Roslyn Harbor today features a varied range of single-family homes, many on large one- or two-acre lots that were carved out of the former estates.

Over 20 percent of the Roslyn Harbor area comprises the historic grounds of Cedarmere and Clayton, the only two Gold Coast estates that remain relatively intact to this day, while the rest is developed primarily into residential districts that had 378 homes in 2019. The housing inventory offers different options that include waterfront homes with stunning water views, a number of new constructions, rentals, and luxury residences with pools, among others.

Roslyn Harbor is about 18 miles east of Manhattan, and served by the Greenvale and Roslyn Stations via the Oyster Bay Branch of the LIRR. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and seven minutes to an hour and 52 minutes via the Long Island Expressway.
