Saltaire NY Real Estate & Homes for Sale

Saltaire, NY Homes for Sale

The community was born in the fall of 1910 when the Fire Island Beach Development Corporation purchased land and began offering lots for sale to the public. It grew rapidly as a consequence of aggressive marketing that by the following year, over a hundred residences had been constructed, and by 1912, there were enough boat owners to form a boat owners organization and a yacht club. In 1917, Saltaire officially incorporated as a village, the first to do so on Fire Island.

Local Area Information

Saltaire is one of the small beach communities on Fire Island across the Great South Bay from the mainland of Long Island, New York, and encompassed by the Town of Islip in Suffolk County. It derives its name from Saltaire, an English village on the River Aire named after Sir Titus Salt. It is one of Fire Island’s only two incorporated villages besides Ocean Beach and is tucked between Fair Harbor to the east and Kismet, the westernmost community.

At 0.23 square miles in the 2020 US Census, Saltaire was the second smallest among Suffolk County’s 32 villages, next to Ocean Beach, and the ninth smallest among the 96 villages on Long Island. Though slightly larger than Ocean Beach, this area has a smaller population of year-round residents and fewer houses than OB, especially since it began implementing a zoning code that restricts development to 470 single-family homes.

Saltaire is a middle-class community consisting of mostly residential districts with homes that are predominantly larger than most on Fire Island. Residences along its tree-lined boardwalks vary from the charming vintage cedar-shingled beach homes built prior to the 1938 hurricane to the sturdy, sleek ultra modern houses built after. A lot of the properties are 4-bedroom homes and several are rentals, though no share renting is allowed.

Saltaire’s “downtown” contains the solitary yet adequately stocked village market and liquor store near the ferry dock on the bay. Around this area is the doctor’s office, village hall with a library, the post office, fire department and the members-only yacht club. The village has no hotels, bars nor public restaurants and, hence, fewer transients and tourists. Locals enjoy the best of both worlds: a serene, low-key living just steps away from the partying, shopping and dining in either direction.

Saltaire is about 50 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and accessible via the Fire Island Ferry services from Bay Shore, NY, which is served by the Long Island Rail Road via the Montauk Branch. The village uses the 11706 ZIP code.

Beaches & Parks

Saltaire is a component of the 30-square-mile Fire Island National Seashore (FINS), which offers a variety of summer recreational activities, such as swimming, surfing, kayaking, hiking, nature photography, ranger-guided programs and other special events. Beachcombing, birdwatching, botanizing, and sometimes even cross-country skiing may also be enjoyed in the winter. FINS consists of almost the entire island, from Fire Island Lighthouse to Smith Point County Park, and all the small communities in between, including Saltaire.

The Schools

Saltaire Village is served by Woodhull School, the only public school in the Fire Island School District. The school serves students from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, and is located in Corneille Estates, immediately west of the Village of Ocean Beach. The Bay Shore Schools and the Islip School District are the two options available for middle and high school students in the district.
