Setauket NY Homes for Sale

During the American Revolutionary War, Setauket was a center of activity in the region and the site of the Battle of Setauket, where the Culper Spy Ring operated. By the following century, Setauket’s industries had prospered, including shipbuilding, but almost all industrial operations had stopped by the early 20th century. When the Long Island Rail Road was completed in 1873, the Setaukets started becoming a summer resort town, attracting many wealthy families into the area, and its population and residential developments significantly increased after World War II.

Local Area Information

Setauket is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Brookhaven on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. The term “Setaukets” used to denote the Setauket-East Setauket CDP before it was divided into Setauket and East Setauket in the 2020 US Census.

Setauket is tucked between the villages of Old Field and Poquott as well as Stony Brook, East Setauket and Stony Brook University. It includes the Strongs Neck peninsula surrounded by the waters of Conscience Bay, Little Bay, Setauket Harbor, Port Jefferson Harbor and The Narrows, all of which offer spectacular water views.

Though the Setaukets are bounded by more commercial areas like Stony Brook and Port Jefferson, they remain primarily residential areas with a small number of businesses. The single-family homes and establishments are a mix of contemporary structures and older ones that have been preserved well, most of which can be found in the Old Setauket Historic District. In its core is Setauket’s New England-style village green, the center of the original settlement.

The historic district includes the Caroline Church, built in 1729 and one of Suffolk County’s oldest structures, the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, the oldest public library and regarded as one of the most comprehensive on Long Island, the Setauket Presbyterian Church established in 1660, a mill pond within the Frank Melville Memorial Park, which was the site of the 1977 Battle of Setauket, and a small historic post office built in 1941 in the Greek revival style.

Besides a wealth of historic homes, Setauket also has many luxury residences, a number of which have pools on spacious lots, and waterfront properties, especially on Strongs Neck overlooking either bay or harbor. The thriving housing market also includes several new constructions and rentals. Most properties have addresses with the 11733 ZIP code, while some of the ones nearest Stony Brook use 11790.

Beaches & Parks

The Frank Melville Memorial Park is a 26-acre property composed of natural woodland with ponds and indigenous species of flora, an estuary, and five historic structures: a barn from the early 20th century, grist mill, the last working miller’s cottage, Bates House, and a post office in the Greek revival style. Located on Old Field Road, the park and its structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a privately owned property where fishing is not allowed, and is open from dawn to dusk.

Longhorn Lane Park is one of the recreational facilities of the Town of Brookhaven. It has a children’s playground, multipurpose field, and park benches. It is located near the northern end of the Longhorn Lane cul-de-sac.

The Schools

Setauket is served by the Three Village Central School District, which has eight public schools. The Three Village Central School District also serves the rest of the towns in the “Three Village” area, and includes the Ward Melville High School, which is known in the country for its lacrosse team as well as its InSTAR science research program, which turns out many semifinalists for the Regeneron Science Talent Search (formerly Intel Science Talent Search).

The district also includes the Three Village Academy, which was founded in 2013 as an alternative for high school students with social phobias or anxieties, and provides them with a nontraditional educational environment.
