Shinnecock Hills is in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, on the South Fork of the East End of Long Island, New York. Local Area Information

Shinnecock Hills is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Southampton on the South Fork of Long Island, New York’s East End in Suffolk County. It is bounded by Southampton Village on the east, Hampton Bays on the west, Tuckahoe on the north and the Shinnecock Indian Reservation on the southeast, while its southern shore overlooks the beautiful Shinnecock Bay. It shares the 11968 ZIP code with some of its neighbors.

Prior to 1859, the land including the site of the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club belonged to the Native American Shinnecock tribe. Today, the area has been nicely developed, though it remains a mostly wooded neighborhood of primarily single-family homes built along peaceful tree-lined roads and partially hidden by luxuriant foliage.

Shinnecock Hills has many waterfront homes with fishing piers, boat docks and breathtaking water views of the bay or any of the three ponds that surround the southeast section: Far Pond, Middle Pond and Old Fort Pond. Residences range from the more modest to 4-bedroom homes and grander luxury houses and include rentals. There are also a number of homes with pools, first-floor bedrooms and other features and amenities.

Shinnecock Hills properties are usually marketed as being in the “Hamptons,” most likely because the high-class summer vacation destination begins in the area immediately east of this hamlet. Like its eastern counterparts, this community offers motels, inns and dining options, though fewer and relatively less expensive, and has a more relaxed vibe than the Hamptons.

Shinnecock Hills is approximately 88 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Hampton Bays Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about two hours and 12 minutes to two hours and 21 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Southern State Parkway.
