The Hempstead Lake State Park in West Hempstead is less than a 10-minute drive from South Hempstead. The multi-use facility is home to three bodies of water, Hempstead Lake, McDonald Pond and South Pond, all of which offer opportunities for fishing. It also has boat launches, horse trails, picnic pavilions, grills, ballfields, playing courts for basketball, tennis and pickleball, biking and hiking trails, playgrounds, snowshoeing/cross-country skiing and a historic wooden carousel.
