South Huntington is in Suffolk County’s Town of Huntington on Long Island, New York. South Huntington is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. Its surrounding neighbors include Dix Hills to the east, Melville to the south, West Hills to the west, Huntington Station to the north, as well as Greenlawn and Elwood to the northeast.

South Huntington is a wealthy community not only economically but also in terms of its history and culture. It was once home to the poet Walt Whitman, who was arguably the most famous person born in the area. Whitman’s childhood home was built in 1819 by his father, and the house remains open all year round as a museum.

In 1961, South Huntington became home to Long Island’s first enclosed shopping center known today as the Walt Whitman Shops. Anchored by Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue, the premier shopping complex houses over 100 fancy department stores, boutiques, restaurants, and other businesses.

The hamlet’s residential areas encompass almost entirely single-family homes, which are more compact in the western region, while those in the east have larger lots and are less dense. Some of the homes are occasionally put on the market as rentals. The properties use the same postal address with the 11746 ZIP code as Huntington Station.

The 49,000-square-foot South Huntington Public Library features a playground and patio seating in an outdoor garden. It was built and publicly opened in 2004 to house its vast collections, computers, and other modern facilities, and to make room for community programs and its growing population of visitors.

South Huntington is about 35 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Long Island Rail Road via the Port Jefferson Branch to the north and the Ronkonkoma Branch to the south. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and 12 minutes to an hour and 50 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Koster Park has tennis courts and a covered pavilion area, and is located at the intersection of Engelke Avenue and Reynolds Street.

Terry Farrell Park has athletic facilities such as basketball courts and baseball and soccer fields. It also has a play area with slides, swings and rock climbing walls for children and beginners.

The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site features the unusual American architecture of the influential poet’s original dwelling. The home is on Route 110, just across the street from the Walt Whitman Center, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. At least 130 Whitman portraits, notes, manuscripts and other artifacts, as well as 19th century furniture are all on display. The site also houses a picnic area, gift shop and visitor center, and offers film showing, hiking and guided tours.

The Schools

Most of the hamlet’s students attend the schools of the South Huntington Union Free School District, which has seven public schools. Birchwood Intermediate School and Countrywood Primary Center are located in the area, the Silas Wood Sixth Grade Center and Maplewood Intermediate School are in Huntington Station, and the rest are in West Hills.

A small student populace in the southeast area of South Huntington attend the Half Hollow Hills Central School District, whose public schools are located in the Dix Hills and Melville areas.
