Local Area Information

South Jamesport is an unincorporated hamlet in the southeast corner of Suffolk County’s Town of Riverhead on the North Fork of Long Island, New York. It is tucked between Jamesport to the North, Aquebogue to the west and Laurel to the east, which is in the Town of Southold. The southern coastal area affords amazing water views of the Great Peconic Bay on the longest river on Long Island, the Peconic River.

The modern-day South Jamesport is technically part of the larger census-designated place (CDP) of Jamesport, and the two share a rich history. The former was conceptualized in 1825 as a whaling ship port by James Tuthill, for whom the neighborhoods are named, but its bay waters were too shallow to harbor ships. When the former Jamesport Station of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) opened in 1845, the bayfront began to transform into a popular resort and fishing spot.

This area south of Peconic Bay Boulevard established its own post office with the 11970 ZIP code in 1893. Residential areas encompass largely single-family homes, a number of which belong to smaller communities that maintain their own private beach on the bay. The properties include 3-bedroom homes, luxury residences, 4-bedroom cottages and waterfront houses along the shore, and plenty offer master bedrooms on first floor, pools and other features.

Beginning in the mid-19th century, the South Jamesport area was also dotted with several Italianate mansions, such as the former home of distinguished sea captain Jedediah Hawkins. This 1863 landmark became the current classic 22-acre boutique hotel, the Jedediah Hawkins Inn, which also offers a restaurant and The Speakeasy and is just several minutes’ walk from the lovely South Jamesport Beach.
