St. James NY Homes for Sale

Saint James is a community in the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It retains much of the charm and character of its complex and vibrant history, which it shares with the neighboring villages of Nissequogue and Head of the Harbor.

Local Area Information

Saint James is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It is adjacent to the hamlet of Smithtown and Village of the Branch to the southwest, Nesconset to the south, and Head of the Harbor Village to the northwest, all of which are also in the Town of Smithtown. In the Town of Brookhaven, Stony Brook lies to the northeast and the village of Lake Grove is to the southeast.

The hamlet’s name is taken from the St. James Episcopal Church formed around 1853. With the residents’ pooled resources, a train station for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) was built in 1873, and the neighborhood eventually became a favored summer resort that attracted many celebrities and wealthy families.

Amidst the community’s steady growth, it retains much of its historic charm and character in the Saint James District, which includes the Deepwells Farm County Park, St. James Episcopal Church, St. James General Store, St. James Fire Department, and St. James Station, Long Island’s second oldest railroad station. There is a commercial center along Lake Avenue with more shops, businesses, and services concentrated near the train depot.

The rest is made up of single-family homes, condos, co-ops, and other multifamily housing sites, some of which are in the 55+ communities of Kensington Gardens and Fairfield at St. James. The latter includes waterfront properties with captivating water views of a pond, as does The Hamlet Estates. All three are among the area’s private gated communities. There are also luxury homes with pools on spacious lots, a few new constructions and rentals. Most use the Saint James, NY 11780 ZIP code, and others use either 11787 or 11755.

The area is approximately 50 miles northeast of Manhattan in New York City and is served by the Saint James Station via the Port Jefferson Branch of the LIRR. Traveling by car to or from the city takes about an hour and 44 minutes to two hours and 18 minutes via the Northern State Parkway and Long Island Expressway.
