Syosset NY Homes for Sale

Syosset is a community in Nassau County’s Town of Oyster Bay on Long Island, New York. Its family-friendly neighborhoods feature plenty of restaurants, shopping, and recreational activities that everyone can enjoy.

Local Area Information

Syosset is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in one of Nassau County’s three townships, the Town of Oyster Bay, near the North Shore of Long Island, New York. Conveniently located between the interstate and Jericho Turnpike, it is primarily a neighborhood of apartments, distinguished by plenty of nice homes and a certain charm of a small town with wooded hillsides.

There are, however, several small businesses operating in the Syosset, NY 11791 and 11773 ZIP codes, and the Chamber of Commerce is working to help new business people start their own businesses. They are conveniently spread throughout various commercial areas in the downtown business district and the east-west Jericho Turnpike, which is a major commercial strip. Syosset certainly is growing, while retaining its original values.

Syosset Station serves as an invisible boundary that divides the hamlet informally between north and south. On the north, houses tend to be older and have more character, since it is where many of the farms were originally located, and, after being subdivided and developed, a few homes from the 1800s remained on lots of no less than an acre. On the south are the more standard housing structures, including starter single-family homes at entry-level prices, and possible mother-daughter houses, though there are also luxury properties with pools.

Syosset has its own school district, post office, fire department, and train station, even though it is not incorporated. It has a gated condominium complex, Hidden Ridge, which is a great alternative to single-family houses for either first-time home buyers or empty-nesters who wish to downsize. An alternative is the nearby Eagle Rock Apartments at Woodbury, which is often used as a means of entry into Syosset schools, and has 482 one- and two-bedroom rental units.

The community is approximately 30 miles east of Manhattan, and served by the Syosset Station via the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Commuters, though, may find that the Hicksville Station to the south provides more frequent and faster trips. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 37 minutes to an hour and 55 minutes via the Long Island Expressway.

Beaches & Parks

The Syosset-Woodbury Community Park is an excellent place to spend a warm day, particularly as they have a great pool with a diving board, while an icy winter day can be well spent on their outdoor skating/hockey rink. Other amenities include various courts for basketball, bocce, handball, shuffleboard and tennis, as well as nature trails, a picnic area with barbecue grills, and a playground.

The hamlet also has a wealth of smaller neighborhood parks, including the ones on Cold Spring Road, Oregon Court, Ira Road, Peg Place, Dorothy Street, Syosset Circle, Gainsboro Lane, Marlene Drive, and a couple on Miller Boulevard. These parks have a playground, and a few have a basketball court and other additional amenities. There is also Calvert Field and Michael Lewis Wolkis Field, which both have a softball field.

The Schools

The neighborhood has nine public schools, comprising six elementary, two middle, and one high school, all part of the Syosset Central School District. The tenth school is located in Woodbury, which the school district also serves, along with parts of East Norwich, Hicksville, Jericho, Laurel Hollow, Muttontown, Oyster Bay Cove, and Plainview. This means Syosset residents could move to nearby areas and still send their kids to Syosset schools.

Recognized for its music programs, the school district is also known for teaching coding to its grade-schoolers and various world languages as early as kindergarten, while the American Sign Language is among the options for high schoolers.

Several homes in the northwestern tip of Syosset are served by the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District.
