The area that is now Water Island contained a restaurant known as the Pavilion as early as 1878. In the 1890s, it became the location of the notable White House Hotel, a fine specimen of beach hotel design created by Edward Ryder and often visited by the Roosevelt family. Further development began in 1912 when Caldwell Realty made land available for residential construction.

Water Island is a beachfront community on Fire Island, a barrier beach located on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, and separated from the “mainland” by the Great South Bay. It is one of the neighborhoods that comprise the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County.

Near Water Island is Barrett Beach Park in the Fire Island Pines community to the west and the neighborhood of Davis Park to the east, both of which cushion this exceptionally private community from the rest of the beach population on Fire Island and afford residents their highly valued privacy. The southern shores are bordered by the invigorating waters of the Atlantic Ocean, providing additional opportunities for swimming, water sports and waterfront activities.

Water Island is composed of 50 or so residences, all single-family homes on moderately sized lots. The tiny area is packed with waterfront homes with amazing water views of the bay or ocean, at times both, and there are also homes with pools and luxury properties.

No commercial establishments are found in this community, and the nearest stores and restaurants are located in the neighboring hamlets of Fire Island Pines and Davis Park.

Along with Fire Island Pines, the neighborhood is provided with fire protection services by the Fire Island Pines Fire District, contracted by the Water Island Fire Protection District, through the Fire Island Pines Volunteer Fire Department established in 1959. The Suffolk County Police Department’s Marine Bureau patrols and provides Emergency Medical Services to the community.

Beaches & Parks

Barrett Beach Park is one the smallest attractions on Fire Island, and among the most remote and hardest to access. It has the basic beach park amenities, such as picnic and playground areas, a boat dock, boardwalk, and bathrooms. Along with magnificent seaside views and nature walks, visitors benefit from park ranger-led programs on a variety of topics. It is located in the area once known as Talisman, which used to be a summer hotspot for an upscale international clientele, and once regarded as the “jewel” of Long Island.

The 30-square-mile Fire Island National Seashore offers an assortment of summer recreational activities, such as swimming, surfing, kayaking, hiking, nature photography, ranger-guided programs and other special events. Beachcombing, birdwatching, botanizing, and sometimes even cross-country skiing may also be enjoyed in the winter. The National Seashore consists of almost the entire island, from Fire Island Lighthouse to Smith Point County Park, and all the small communities in between, including Water Island.
