West Babylon NY Homes for Sale

West Babylon is a neighborhood in Suffolk County’s Town of Babylon on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, whose pristine beaches in the early years drew a lot of upper- and middle-class families, a number of whom built summer cottages in the area. They became year-round homes that formed the residential neighborhoods of this suburban community.

Local Area Information

West Babylon is the largest hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Babylon on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, in Suffolk County. It adjoins Lindenhurst, North Lindenhurst, and East Farmingdale to the west, Wyandanch to the north, as well as North Babylon and the village of Babylon to the east. The south side features waterfront homes with marvelous water views of the Great South Bay.

West Babylon’s first learning center was an early 1800s one-room schoolhouse, believed to be where the famous writer and poet Walt Whitman temporarily taught in the winter of 1836. The area’s earliest settlers were Dutch farmers who established a thriving flower industry. Expansive bulb fields decorated the countryside, where a windmill stood during the mid-1900s. Today, the windmill image used throughout the neighborhood is a reference to the Dutch legacy and the windmill that towered above the nurseries.

During the peak of Babylon’s resort era, many upper-class vacationers came to West Babylon to build their summer homes, but it was the middle-class families that built the summer bungalows that eventually became year-round homes, which ultimately established the neighborhoods that peaked during the population boom after World War II.

The area encompasses single-family homes and multifamily residences, which may be rentals, potential mother-daughter, new constructions, or luxury homes, or have a pool or accessory apartments. It also includes Venetian Shores, the southwest peninsula often thought of as part of Lindenhurst because it is served by the Lindenhurst School District and Post Office and uses the 11757 ZIP code. The rest of the community uses mostly the West Babylon, NY 11704 ZIP code.

West Babylon is around 40 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Lindenhurst and Babylon Stations via the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch and the Pinelawn Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 20 minutes to an hour and 20 minutes via the Northern State Parkway.
