Westbury NY Homes for Sale

Westbury is an increasingly vibrant, diverse, and bucolic village with tree-lined streets that bring forth a countryside vibe while having practically everything a suburban community could offer: the convenience of nearby chain stores and malls, the eclectic array of restaurants along Post Avenue, the cultural sites, and the accessible parkways, state routes, and train stations.

Local Area Information

Westbury is an incorporated village in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The unincorporated hamlets that surround its boundaries, including New Cassel, Salisbury (South Westbury), and parts of Jericho that are in the Town of Hempstead and a corner of the Town of Oyster Bay, also use the name Westbury. The performing venue known today as the NYCB Theatre at Westbury is part of Jericho but located in the Westbury, NY 11590 ZIP code. Together, these areas form a region called Greater Westbury.

The area was renamed in 1675 by Henry Willis, one of its early settlers, after his hometown in Westbury, Wiltshire County, England. Near the end of the 19th century, affluent families started building lavish estates on the north side, which became Old Westbury Village. To serve the wealthy community, Post Avenue developed into a commercial center, and many mansion workers moved into the Westbury area. It shifted from an agricultural community as streets were outlined and laid out, and incorporated as a village in 1932.

In 2009, the affluent Westbury Village was named one of the “best places for the rich and single” by CNN Money Magazine. Single-family homes in the area are comparatively moderately priced, attracting millennials, young professionals, and empty nesters. For those who do not wish to own, there are many rentals, condominiums, and high-end hotels, such as the Horizon at Westbury.

Various other housing options in the village include the gated community of Meadowbrook Pointe, offering lifestyle condo living for the 55 and above. There are also many luxury homes with pools, new constructions, co-ops, possible mother-daughter houses, multifamily properties, townhouses, vacant lots, and other types that would suit one’s needs and desires.

The area is served by the Westbury and Carle Place Stations via the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. A car trip to or from Manhattan, New York City, roughly 23 miles to the west, takes about 54 minutes to an hour and 28 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway, which both facilitate most road trips.
