Wheatley Heights NY Homes for Sale

Wheatley Heights is a relatively small hamlet in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It is a primarily residential suburban community encompassing well-maintained homes, many of which have well-kept lawns, in Cape, Colonial, and a mix of ranch architectural styles.

Local Area Information

Wheatley Heights is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, along the Huntington-Babylon Town line on Long Island, New York. It is bounded by Wyandanch on the west and south, Deer Park on the east, and the Town of Huntington’s Melville and Dix Hills on the north. It had a total land area of 1.30 square miles in the 2020 US Census and was the sixth smallest among the 127 CDPs in Suffolk County.

The area became popular for its mineral spring water during its early years, and became one of New York City’s largest suppliers of building bricks. Once an affluent northern portion of Wyandanch, it developed a separate identity and was named “Wheatley Heights” after the subdivision outlined by real estate developer William Geiger in 1913. It was not until 1974, though, that it was granted its own post office and was formally established, though the two areas still share the 11798 ZIP code.

Wheatley Heights comprises predominantly single-family homes, some of which are new constructions, and a few remaining vacant lots. The rest are community parks, recreational facilities, a small shopping center, gas station, and the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds. Most of these are along Colonial Springs Road, on which the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts is also located.

The Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights/Dix Hills, Inc. Civic Association, the Mothers Club of Wheatley Heights, and the Wheatley Heights Concerned Fathers Association are among the organizations that host a range of activities beneficial to the community. Other events include the Haunted House hosted each Halloween by the Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps and the annual Fire Prevention Week held by the Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company.

Wheatley Heights is roughly 37 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Pinelawn Station and Wyandanch Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and a half to an hour and 57 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

The Adventure Park at Long Island is a major attraction in Wheatley Heights, especially for those into ziplining and climbing or who just love the outdoors. The parkland is composed of over a hundred treetop platforms, interlinked by a series of hanging trails, and aerial rope courses. The trails are color-coded and self-guided. Also available are food concessions, free drinking water, picnic tables, restrooms, and many walking trails throughout the park premises for the non-climbing guests who wish to explore, observe, and take pictures.

The Hermann Griem Park boasts a substantially-sized open space ideal for playing an array of sports and outdoor activities, along with a handball court, softball field and two tennis courts. It also has a shaded area with tables and grills for picnicking, a handicapped-accessible children’s playground, and a scenic corner with a gazebo, arbored wooden bridge and small waterfall. Restrooms, free Wi-Fi access and parking slots are also available to visitors. This town park is named after the former Wheatley Heights Community Association president.

The Schools

District students in the northeast corner attend Vanderbilt Elementary School, and those in the southeast and the rest of the mid-southern areas attend Otsego, both of which feed into Candlewood Middle School and Half Hollow Hills High School West.

The small triangular area between Portland Way, Main Avenue and Straight Path is served by the Wyandanch Union Free School District.
