Wyandanch NY Homes for Sale

Wyandanch is a hamlet in Suffolk County’s Town of Babylon on Long Island, New York. The lower- to upper-middle-class community is an ideal mix of residential suburban neighborhoods, commercial and industrial districts, and sweeping green spaces that include a golf course, community parks, and undeveloped lands.

Local Area Information

Wyandanch is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Babylon on Long Island, New York. It shares land borders with Wheatley Heights on the northeast, Deer Park on the east, West Babylon on the south, East Farmingdale on the west, and the Town of Huntington’s Melville on the northwest.

A farming community developed in the area when the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) reached neighboring Deer Park in 1842. Named after Chief Wyandanch of the Native American Montaukett tribe, the community grew and had a flourishing brickworks industry that supplied millions of bricks made from local clay and sand for construction use in New York City.

Open spaces constitute nearly half of Wyandanch and mostly encompass cemeteries, a golf course, community parks, and undeveloped lands. The residential neighborhoods are composed of primarily single-family homes, which may be new constructions or rentals or include accessory apartments, a pool, or other features, and several remaining vacant lots.

The industrial areas are located south of Patton and New Avenues as well as around the rail station, while a few are along Straight Path, which also serves as the main commercial downtown. Community services, including the Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps and the Martin Luther King Jr. Health Center, make up the rest of the area. Most neighborhoods use the 11798 ZIP code, and others use either 11735 or 11704.

Community events and annual traditions include Memorial Day, which is typically celebrated with a parade, some food, and festive activities. The hamlet is divided into the service areas of the Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company and the East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Company.

Wyandanch is about 36 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Wyandanch Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch of the LIRR. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 12 minutes to an hour and 28 minutes and is facilitated by the nearby Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway, and Southern State Parkway.

The district is home to the highly competitive Warriors, and has one of the most effective varsity programs for basketball in the State of New York.

The rest of the neighborhood is zoned for the North Babylon Union Free School District, West Babylon Union Free School District, and Half Hollow Hills Central School District, though there are very few homes in Wyandanch located in these districts.
