Yaphank, NY Homes for Sale

It is considered that Yaphank began with the building of a dam and mill on Carman’s River in 1739. When the railroad reached the area in 1843, the small milling community rapidly developed a bustling commercial district. Once called Millville for the two mills built by John Homan, the area was renamed Yaphank from an American Indian term meaning “bank of a river.”

Local Area Information

Yaphank is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven, the most populous of the ten townships in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. Its neighbors include Gordon Heights, Middle Island and Ridge to the north, Upton and Shirley to the east, North Bellport and the hamlet of Brookhaven to the south and Medford to the west.

With a land area of 13.65 square miles in the 2020 census, Yaphank was the fourth largest CDP in Brookhaven Town and the eighth largest among Suffolk County’s 127 CDPs. Despite the large size, its population of 5,974 was relatively small compared to Coram’s 40,220 in a 13.82-square-mile area, making Yaphank among Long Island’s least densely populated hamlets.

Residential areas consist mainly of single-family homes and a number of condos, including those in Colonial Woods Whispering Pines and Country Pointe Meadows, a gated community for the 55 and over. The large diversity of real estate types and features also include homes with pools, vacant lots, rentals, potential horse properties and even historic homes within a historic district. Most neighborhoods use the Yaphank, NY 11980 ZIP code, while others use either 11763 or 11719.

Many large industries and commercial establishments are concentrated along Patchogue-Yaphank/Sills Road, Old Dock Road and Horseblock Road, though there are also many businesses in other areas, including along Mill Road and Main Street. The community is home to many of Suffolk County’s offices and facilities, such as the Suffolk County Fire Academy and the headquarters of the Suffolk County Police Department.

The area is about 55 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Yaphank Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 28 minutes to an hour and 41 minutes via the Long Island Expressway (I-495) or Northern State Parkway.
