About The Town Of Islip…
The Town of Islip is located in southwestern Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. It is adjacent to the townships of Babylon to the west, Huntington to the northwest, Smithtown to the north, and Brookhaven to the northeast and east, and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south.
Overseen by a Town Supervisor, this third largest town in the state of New York comprises four incorporated villages and several unincorporated areas, including the hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) also called Islip. The Town’s 163.1 square miles of land and water include parts of the Great South Bay and Fire Island, with several available passenger ferry services traveling to the latter from two major ferry landings at Bay Shore and Sayville.
The Town of Islip owns and operates two airports, one of which is the Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, which is the only Suffolk or Nassau County airport with scheduled service on major airlines, carrying more than two million passengers a year. The smaller airport is a historic, rural airport called Bayport Aerodrome in the hamlet of Bayport.
Many consider Islip and its villages and hamlets an ideal place for family life. Central Islip boasts of new condominiums and a new shopping complex. Cedar Street, in Islip’s “Old Town” section, as well as East and West Islip and Lindenhurst, are more small towns than suburbs.
Islip’s central location on Long Island provides easy access from major highways, and residents enjoy a diverse population, beach proximity, easy commuting to New York City, and a wide range of housing options. Lindenhurst is popular among young professionals, and is home to the Suffolk Community College and Long Island University campuses in Brentwood. The Hauppauge Industrial Park is one of Long Island’s largest business parks, with over 1,300 companies employing residents.
The Connetquot River State Park Preserve is in Islip Terrace, while East Islip, formerly an enclave of mansions on the south shore — and once home to the namesake of the township, Islip Grange — is now home to Heckscher State Park, with beaches, playgrounds, recreational programs, hiking and biking, fishing, cross-country skiing, and more. The Town is also home to three other New York State parks: Brentwood State Park, Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island, and Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park in Great River.
