About The Town of Hempstead…
Hempstead is a township in southwest Nassau County on Long Island, New York. It is bordered by the borough of Queens in New York City on the west, the Town of North Hempstead on the north, the Town of Oyster Bay on the east and the Atlantic Ocean on the south. It is the largest township in the United States in terms of population and the New York metropolitan area’s most populous municipality outside New York City.
The Town is about 142 square miles and has 22 incorporated villages and 34 unincorporated areas, including a village also named Hempstead. It also includes some parts of Long Island’s barrier islands, Long Beach and Jones Beach Island. The Town has more than 65 parks and marinas, including three state parks, namely, Hempstead Lake State Park, Valley Stream State Park and Jones Beach State Park, regarded as the most popular beach in the country’s east coast.
Hempstead Town has an extensive range of housing options spanning single-family homes, condos, co-ops, townhouses and multifamily properties. There are many 4-bedroom homes, luxury residences, gated communities, new constructions, potential mother-daughter, historic properties, vacant lots and rentals.
Plenty of homes have private pools, first-floor bedrooms, accessory apartments or provision for one as well as other features and amenities. Some neighborhoods offer waterfront homes affording fabulous water views and 55+ communities featuring 2-bedroom condos with a basement and homes with a garage.
Several institutions of higher learning are located in Hempstead Town, including Nassau Community College in Garden City, Molloy College in Rockville Centre and the main campus of the largest private university on Long Island, Hofstra University, in the village of Hempstead.
Founded in 1644, Hempstead was originally named “Heemstede,” possibly a Dutch version of the name of Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, England, the birthplace of Town co-founder John Carman. It was once part of Queens County and included the Town of North Hempstead until differences in allegiance resulted in its division in 1784 into North Hempstead and South Hempstead, which was renamed Hempstead in 1801.
