The township of Huntington is located in the northwest corner of Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. It is bounded by the Long Island Sound on the north and the townships of Smithtown on the east, Islip on the southeast, Babylon on the south, and Oyster Bay on the west in Nassau County.
Roughly 40 miles east of Manhattan, Huntington Town encompasses four incorporated villages and several unincorporated areas. It includes a hamlet also called Huntington, which roughly corresponds to a census-designated place (CDP) of the same name and has a bustling downtown locally known as Huntington Village. Also located within the Town’s limits are five natural harbors that border its North Shore: Cold Spring, Lloyd, Centerport, Huntington, and Northport Harbors.
Home to many coves, bays and waterfronts, the Town maintains a total of nine beaches and operates three marinas for the enjoyment of its residents. Its boat ramps, municipal golf courses, and parklands also provide recreational benefits, including the sprawling Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve located on the scenic Lloyd Neck peninsula in Lloyd Harbor Village.
As varied as Huntington Town’s population are its housing units in terms of architectural styles, features, and property types, such as single-family homes, condos, co-ops, townhouses, and multifamily complexes. Luxury homes often come with a pool and spacious lot. There are gated communities, new constructions, accessory apartments, potential mother-daughter, and rental properties, while certain neighborhoods feature 55+ communities, horse properties, and waterfront homes with picturesque water views.
Two major medical facilities based in the Town, Huntington Hospital and the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center, not only provide health care to the community but are also its top employers. The others include Canon, Estee Lauder, and Newsday, all of which are headquartered in Melville, as well as the Town’s school districts.
The prominent people who have called the Town of Huntington home make a long list, but perhaps the most notable and famous of all was Walt Whitman, whose birthplace is now a significant and historic landmark in the area.
