About The Town of North Hempstead…
North Hempstead is a third of the townships that constitute Nassau County on Long Island, New York. It occupies 58 square miles of the county’s northwest corner and is bordered by the Long Island Sound on the north, the townships of Oyster Bay and Hempstead respectively on the east and south as well as the borough of Queens in New York City on the west.
North Hempstead Town’s western border is about 14.5 miles from Manhattan, and the commute to and from the city takes an average of 30 minutes by train. Its land boundaries on the north stretch out along the waters of Little Neck Bay, Manhasset Bay and Hempstead Harbor. Comprising 30 incorporated villages and 20 unincorporated communities, North Hempstead is the only one among all the 13 townships on Long Island that does not have a corresponding smaller town or village with the same name.
The thriving housing market in North Hempstead includes a remarkable array of single-family homes, multifamily residences, co-ops, townhouses and condos, such as the luxury properties in the gated communities of the Ritz-Carlton Residences in North Hills Village and the Residences at Glen Harbor in Glenwood Landing. There are many rental properties and 4-bedroom homes, though some have as many as 22 bedrooms and include master bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features.
The Town’s coastal communities along the prestigious North Shore are lined with waterfront homes commanding fine water views of the Sound or any of North Hempstead’s lovely bays. The Town also offers new constructions, potential mother-daughter, historic homes, and lots vast enough for horse properties. There are also 55+ communities that feature homes with a garage, 2-bedroom condos with a basement and 3-bedroom condos.
The Town maintains 38 parks and a beach for the enjoyment of its residents and is home to a shopping mecca called the Americana Manhasset located in a commercial district known as the “Miracle Mile” in Manhasset, the Town seat.
North Hempstead was once part of the Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644 and originally named “Heemstede,” possibly a Dutch version of the name of Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, England, the birthplace of Town co-founder John Carman. After the American Revolution, the northern and southern areas split in 1784 due to political differences and became the Towns of North Hempstead and Hempstead, respectively.
