About The Town of Riverhead…
The Town of Riverhead is located in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, at the northern intersection of two almost parallel peninsulas on Long Island’s East End called North Fork and South Fork. The Town is partially situated on the former and is about 76 miles northeast of New York City. It had a population of 35,902 in the 2020 census.
Riverhead is bordered by Brookhaven Town on the west and southwest, Southampton Town on the southeast and Southold Town on the northeast. To the north are the waters of the Long Island Sound and to the southeast is the mouth of the Peconic River, from where it gets the name “Riverhead.”
Prior to its establishment in 1792, the community was part of Southold Town, forming an exceptionally long land area. The geography made attending town meetings and transacting businesses inconvenient for the residents in the western section, so the area split off and formed what is now the Town of Riverhead. It is the county seat of Suffolk County, though Hauppauge houses most of the county offices.
The Town comprises 10 hamlets or unincorporated neighborhoods, including the hamlet also called Riverhead, which roughly corresponds to a census-designated place (CDP) of the same name and is the primary commercial hub of the Town.
Riverhead offers an extensive range of property options, among which are single-family homes, condos and multifamily houses. A number of residences have one or two bedrooms on first floor, and house sizes vary from 1-bedroom to 4-bedroom homes or larger. There are plenty of luxury homes with pools, rentals, undeveloped vacant lots, new constructions, accessory apartments, potential mother-daughter, and gated communities, like The Highlands Club at Aquebogue.
Several communities offer horse properties, waterfront homes with magnificent water views, and 55+ communities, many of which, such as Sunken Pond Estates, offer 2-bedroom condos. Others, including Windcrest East and Saddle Lakes, feature 3-bedroom condos with a garage. The latter also offers condos with a basement.
Riverhead is home to two New York State parks: Wildwood State Park in Wading River and Hallock State Park Preserve, which it shares with Southold Town and is located in the hamlet of Riverhead. Other major attractions include the Long Island Aquarium, Riverhead Raceway, Splish Splash Water Park in Calverton and the Tanger Outlets Riverhead mall.
